Tour Details

Waqrapukara, also known as Waqrapukra Acomayo Cusco, is a lesser-known archaeological site in Cusco’s south. This Inca fortification in the shape of a horn is a hidden gem nestled among mountain peaks. The full-day Waqrapukara hike with a local expert is ideal for anyone looking for a historic, off-the-beaten-path adventure.

At 4150 meters above sea level, the mountain top horn fortress is located. There are eight farming terraces on the property. The entire stairs leading to the fortification is composed of stones.

Peruvian archaeologists discovered a triple-jammed door during a recent dig. Only sites with tremendous religious power were given such portals by the Incas.

Although the full-day journey isn’t as well-known as a trip to Peru’s Rainbow Mountain or Sacred Valley, you’ll be astounded to learn some fascinating facts about the complex. At 3600 meters above sea level, the hike to the complex begins. It’s only a 550-meter ascent.

You’ll be hiking through a wooded ravine alongside the Apurimac river canyon. We’ll also make a stop at some natural rock formations and cave paintings.

Waqrapukara Trek is an adventure at a high altitude. To avoid altitude sickness, we strongly advise you to spend at least two days in Cusco and acclimate before embarking on the hike.
