The Day Trip to Humantay Lake is a popular day trip from Cusco. It is a beautiful crystal clear lake situated in the Andes at 4,200 meters above sea level, known locally as Laguna Humantay Cusco.
Humantay Lake takes its name from the snow-capped Humantay Mountain. The snow melting from the slope feeds the lake, which is nestled at its base.
Since the Inca era, Humantay Lake has been sacred to the Andean peoples. This is primarily due to their worship of natural beings.
Even today, shamans (Andean priests) make offerings to Apacheta in the lagoon. It’s a way of thanking Mother Earth (Pachamama) for following them on their journey by stacking stones on top of each other.
Only a 1.5-hour hike from Soraypampa will take you to Lake Humantay. If you don’t want to hike, you can rent a horse for an extra fee.
Because Laguna Humantay Cusco is a high-altitude hike, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco to acclimate and avoid altitude sickness before embarking on the full-day journey.
