Tour Details

On this half-day Moray Maras & Salt Mines Tour from Cusco, learn about the Incas’ history and culture. One of our most popular tours. You will learn many fascinating details about the Inca civilisation while accompanied by a native English-speaking guide.

This half-day Moray Maras & Salt Mines Tour provides an overview of Inca life and culture. This tour is highly recommended as part of your acclimatization in Cusco before your journey to Machu Picchu.

Moray:

The circular agricultural terraces in Moray are reminiscent of the Roman amphitheater. The terrace is a large, multi-leveled pit cut into the ground. A varied temperature is supported by each level. In fact, the temperature drops by 15 degrees from the top to the bottom of the terrace.

The Incas experimented with the growth conditions in this area. This allowed them to figure out what temperature was ideal for growing vegetables and grains. Peru now produces over 800 different potato types as a result of this.

Maras:

Maras is a lovely Andean village nestled among the Andes’ snow-capped peaks. The salt mines, which are placed on the slope of a hill, are located here. Since pre-Inca culture, these small, geometrically designed salt ponds have been used to extract salt.

It is passed down through the generations. People still obtain salt using the old process of solar evaporation. They let the natural spring water in and waited for it to dissipate finally scrape the salt out of the ponds by hand.

Maras salt has a particular flavor and is pink in hue. Locals claim that it is also nutrient-dense.
